PHILMONT 2004

Coordinator: Mr. Jerry Bowling 242-****.

As you know we are on the waiting list as a troop.  However, the council will probably have slots for 2004, as they do every year.  These slots are very limited and controlled by the council.  Anyone interested in attending with a council crew, please give Mr. Bowling the following:
     Name
     Date of Birth
Check for $50 made out to Boy Scouts of America
All requests submitted after Wednesday 20 November will be placed on the troop list in the order received.

Council slots are not open at this time.  When the slots do open they fill extremely fast   The troop will keep the registration paperwork and deposit money handy so when the slots open, probably at a monthly roundtable, the money and reservation requests can be handed directly to the council representative.  You will have to go whenever the council attends in 2004 - probably mid thru late July.  Total cost of the trip, depending on airfare, will be around $1200.  The trip will be over two full weeks.  Mr. Gilliland and Jason will confirm the advertisement - this is truly "the trip of a lifetime."

GENERAL NOTES for SCOUTS

·         Thanks from the Home Committee to all who participated in the Toy Drive.  By donating toys, you have made a child happy and allowed monetary donations from other sources to instead be used for food for struggling families.

·         Most of our Troop junior leaders participated in a very successful Junior Leader Training session on December 8-9.  The following Scouts attended the entire session and will be presented with a certificate of completion at our next Court of Honor ... Jason Gilliland, Ryan Ingram, Andrew McGowan, Felix Meissner, Chris Pitoniak, Jake Rahn, Josh Rahn, Doug Schaub, Gregory Schwartz, Andy Short, Dean Thuma.  In addition, the following Scouts were able to attend for a portion of the training ... Ryan Driscoll, Matt Keleher, Matt Malacaria, Mike Shea.  As a result of the great attitudes they demonstrated, each of them learned a lot about leadership, working as patrols, and our new camping excellence program.  Special congratulations go to A-Men Patrol of Ryan Driscoll, Andrew McGowan, Josh Rahn, Doug Schaub, Mike Shea who won the first Troop 89 Camping Excellence Award.

·         We have a new meeting place effective January 2003.  The Church of the Advent (Episcopal) at 78 Pleasant St has graciously given us meeting space.  (Thanks to our committee who worked to find us a new home.)   Two notes:  Please do not park in the church lot when services are being held, such as special occasions like Ash Wednesday.  And, remember this is a place of worship where religious activities may be going on during our meetings – please be respectful both indoors and out.

GENERAL NOTES for PARENTS

·         Please note above the new meeting location starting in January.

·         We still are in need of additional leadership.  The following positions are needed:

-          Recording secretary.  Take notes at the monthly committee meetings held on Monday nights.

-          Adult food coordinator for camping trips.  You don’t have to shop and cook – just make somebody does!

-          Advancement Night Records Assistant.  Help our Advancement Chair handle the paperwork on Advancement Nights – usually once every other month.

-          Court of Honor Assistant – help coordinate food and other details with the Advancement Chair.

-          Summer Camp Coordinator

-          Summer Camp Adult Attendees – stay the whole week or only a few days.

-          Scoutmaster – start training with Mike now before he leaves and you have to figure it out yourself!

-          Assistant Scoutmasters

We realize you all have busy lives, but so do the folks who are already helping our Troop.   No experience necessary -- you will get all the support and training you need from the troop.  Women – we’re an equal-opportunity employer!

Call Mike Short, 359-****, to volunteer or with any questions about these positions.  Volunteer now for the position you want – otherwise we will be calling you and all the good jobs might be gone!

·         Those interested in becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, or just taking a more active role in the troop, there will be council training on January 18 and January 25 (two full days) Please contact Dan Gilliland, 359-****, for further information.

*Please pay attention to meeting locations, especially in December & January as we transition to our new home*
